Anyone know that the (estimated) revenue earned for 5000 ad impressions on a skyscraper banner should be? For an Adgator ad. In Rands. Roughly…

@funalaakie Thats difficult to tell because you do not know what the agreement was reached with the advertises. Also different verticals will have different rates. You will also get different pricing depending on which page the ad has been placed, the PR of that page, where it is placed. These all or in part , would be agreed upon by the ad agency and advertiser. You also do not know what you percentage is. I know that Adgator report to give you 50%, but is that before or after deductions, profits etc. So to cut things short you can look at anywhere from R50 CPM to R500 CPM. With a going average of I would think at about R280 CPM. SO for 5000 impressions you're could be looking at 280x5/2 = 700. But thats a guestimate with out knowing all the facts. My experience with Adgator ads is it is far far less than this. I have had as little as R5 CPM and as much as R60 CPM from Adgator. At times where I served thousands of ads, strangely I got the least amount of money. This probably due to the fact that not all ads displayed by Adgator are paid ads.

@robertbravery Interesting. Thanks once again for the input Robert. To put my frustration into perspective, I earned R7 after getting 5000 impressions on the seacom skyscrpaper ad :P Anyway. The ad is gone now. I understand that wordpress frowns upon anyone making money from their service. The bastards

@funalaakie Well I guess Wordpress.com is free service after all. :( Yeah sounds very similar to what I got. Yours works out to about R1.40 CPM. My question is can that actually be right. Surely no one is paying that type of money for ad space. Are you sure that it was all 5000 paid ad. Where all 5000 ad impressions Secom's?

@robertbravery @funalaakie guys i can assure you that your calculations on Adgator CPM is waaaayyyy off the mark. We never sell lower than R100 CPM and our rate card is R200. We share this revenue with you 50/50 and then we pay our expenses. So, you make between R0.10 and R0.20 per paying ad impression. We distribute the costs of running adgator from our share - not yours

@justinhartman Hey thanks for the explanation Justin. So then why the low revenue per ad on most of the impressions. As @funalaakie he got R7 for 5000. Just a question to better understand. We can only calculate what we see in stats. 7/5000*1000 = CPM = R1.40

@robertbravery @justinhartman Thanks gents. This has been both enlightening and frustrating. I guess the real question is what would you do in my situation? (i.e. getting great traffic but making bugger all). I’m not sure where to go from here...

@funalaakie First thing to do is move your WP blog to a self hosted. Easier said that done. THe moving is easy, it's the redirects that's the problem. So many of your readers will be used to your old address. There must be tons of links to that old address. We have to find out if wordpress.com does 301 redirects. So the difficult thing is retaining your readers and retaining your backlinks and search engine index. I'll investigate more and let you know the best route

@robertbravery Thanks Robert. I REALLY appreciate your help. I've been trying to figure this out for months now! I'm sure you can now understand why it's been so frustrating for me. Just to let you know: I never forget a favour given :-)

@funalaakie SO far, I've seen that Wordrpress.com does not allow 301 redirect, which is what you want in order to bring Link juice, PR and update SE indexes. THey only do a 302, temporary redirect. For a $10 per year fee. But this is not the same. Because as soon as you stop the 302 redirect, then you're high and dry. I have emailed WP.com, but do not expect an answer. My gut feeling is to do the 302 redirect for a year or so. During that time you can work on notifying your current readers of the move. Encouraging them to change their Links. Then cut of Wordpress.com, and unfortunately you will have to start the PR from scratch. I have heard that many were able to pick theirs up within a year or less. I will continue to investigate and let you know what I find. Later.
